Relationship between basal metabolism and physical activity in Ecuadorian university students

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between basal metabolism (MB) and physical activity levels in university students. MB represents energy expenditure at rest, while physical activity can influence this parameter. A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 714 Ecuadorian university students, the Harris-Benedict equation was used to calculate energy expenditure at rest and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to evaluate their physical habits. The results showed an inverse correlation between resting energy expenditure and days spent in vigorous and moderate physical activity, suggesting that students with higher resting energy expenditure engaged in less high-intensity physical activity. No relationship was found between resting energy expenditure and walking. Furthermore, higher levels of physical activity influence energy expenditure at rest, highlighting the importance of promoting regular exercise to optimize energy expenditure. These findings suggest the need to implement programs that encourage a higher level of exercise in college students.
