The main objective of the research is to optimize the psychological resources of athletesand their volitional qualities in high performance sports. There are ample samples about
the importance of volitional qualities as a study variable for sports psychology. Authors
such as Cañizares (2008), Sánchez (2005) and García (2004) attest that they are
necessary to achieve the performance and success expected by athletes. This article
refers to the volitional qualities that are manifested in high-performance sports. It
considers the characteristics of sports activity that contribute to consolidate this decisive
feature in the behavior of athletes, from the confrontation with obstacles and difficulties.
It takes into account the classical theoretical foundations of authors such as Rubinstein
(1967), Puni (1969) and Rudick (1974) and it is proposed to group volitional qualities in
four dimensions considering the particularities of high performance, these are autonomy
and independence; tenacity and resolution; perseverance and persistence and autonomy
and self-control.
