Managerial skills in the coaching staff of Cuba’s national handball teams: an initial exploration

Abstract

The art of managing or leading requires technical knowledge about the area to be managed, it is necessary to know how to do it, and this requires interpersonal skills and abilities to motivate, lead, guide, influence and persuade the team being managed. This article is part of a master’s research in progress and arises from the need to develop management skills for the successful performance of professionals who must manage processes for high competence. The final objective of the research is to elaborate a system of actions to put managerial skills into practice by the coaching staff of the Cuban National Handball Teams and this article explores this situation in the aforementioned teams. The coaching staff of the Cuban national handball teams will be used as a sample. Research methods such as the survey will be used, as well as the analytical-synthetic method. In addition, the information obtained in practice will be integrated by means of methodological triangulation. The spheres of action of managers and the main skills needed in each one are analysed, as well as the reasons for each one of them. Finally, criteria and experiences of how managerial skills are developed and used by the technical management of teams are presented.
